Applicants must hold an approved undergraduate bachelor degree or equivalent qualification. The Master of Teaching is a pre-service teaching degree and admission normally will not be granted to applicants who already hold a teaching qualification in the same area. Selection is based on academic merit.

Additional entry requirements

Applicants must complete a non-academic assessment task known as a Teaching Capabilities Statement as part of their application to demonstrate their motivation to teach, their strong interpersonal and communication skills, willingness to learn, resilience, self-efficacy, and strong organisational and planning skills. This involves a short statement in response to three set questions used to demonstrate suitability for study and work in the teaching profession. Applicants who select this course as a preference during the application process will be directed to a page to meet this requirement.

The Australian Government has recently introduced the Literacy and Numeracy Test for all initial teacher education (ITE) students to ensure they have the high level of personal literacy and numeracy skills required of teachers. The test is a single, national instrument designed to assess elements of an individual’s literacy and numeracy skills and will be used to demonstrate that ITE graduates are in the top 30 per cent of the population for literacy and numeracy. All students commencing an ITE program after 1 January 2017 will be required to meet the benchmark prior to graduation. For further information, including registration details, please check the test administrator’s website. There are also important inherent requirements for this course and applicants are strongly advised to become aware of these requirements.

Entry Requirements

 

Applicants for the Master of Teaching (Special Education) (Primary R-7 Specialisation) must hold an approved bachelor degree or equivalent qualification with a major in one the following: English, Drama, Mathematics, Information Technology, Modern languages (restricted to Spanish, French, Italian, Japanese, Chinese, Indonesian, German and Modern Greek), Science (Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Earth Sciences), Visual Arts, Health Education, Physical Education, History, Geography.

Applicants for the Master of Teaching (Special Education) (Secondary Specialisation) must hold an approved bachelor degree or equivalent qualification with a major (preferably two) that enable them to teach to Year 12 in at least one of: English, Drama, Mathematics, Modern Languages (restricted to Spanish, French, Italian, Japanese, Chinese, Indonesian, German and Modern Greek), Science (Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Earth Sciences), Visual Arts, Health Education, Physical Education, History, Geography, Business Studies, Legal Studies and Psychology.

Not all teaching specialisations are offered every year. If your teaching area is Physical Education, you must apply for the Master of Teaching (Special Education) (Secondary) - Physical Education (SATAC code 2CM228) to be considered.

Note that in South Australia, to teach to Year 10, four undergraduate semester topics in the specialisation are needed; and to teach to Year 12, six undergraduate semester topics in the specialisation are needed. Not all of the above curriculum areas are taught throughout Years 8 to 12.
