You could help run a system that moves about $200 billion dollars between financial institutions each day and ultimately settles all non-cash payments in Australia from high-value corporate transfers to consumer retail payments. This team also manages the settlement of trades for the Reserve Bank’s monetary policy implementation, international reserves management and foreign exchange payments. In Payments Settlements Department you will promote the public interest by ensuring the reliable, safe and efficient functioning of critical national infrastructure, which is essential to support the day-to-day business of the Australian economy.

As a graduate in Payments Settlements, you will gain a unique and interesting insight into the operational work of a central bank and benefit from continual learning and development opportunities. You will be exposed to a range of different Bank functions, and collaborate with experienced colleagues based in a number of domestic and international offices. As part of the 2023 Graduate Development Program cohort, you also have the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of formal training courses aimed at enhancing your writing, presentation and analytical skills.

Payments Settlements Department is currently recruiting for graduates in two streams.

Business Policy Stream

The ‘Business, Policy and Services’ team is the business owner of RITS and the Fast Settlement Service (FSS). As a graduate in this stream, you will be at the centre of formulating and implementing wide-ranging business decisions that may cover topics such as cyber security, competition and innovation to ensure the RBA’s critical payment systems remain world-class.

From day one, you will get the opportunity to:

  • analyse and visualise large datasets to monitor and interpret payment trends
  • write and present briefings to management with key data insights
  • monitor developments in domestic and international payment systems
  • liaise with financial institutions, payment services providers and other central banks
  • collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to develop business solutions

Applicants for the Business Policy Stream must hold or be completing a degree with strong academic achievement with a business/economics/commerce focus. Contributory studies in finance, information technology and/or business information systems, would be highly valued.

Business Analyst Stream

As the Business Analyst graduate, you will be working as part of an integrated team of developers, testers, operations specialists and business policy staff to deliver solutions that enhance RITS and other Payments Settlements systems.

From day one, you will get the opportunity to:

  • undertake analysis of current business processes to identify improvements and efficiencies
  • contribute to successful project delivery of key internal system upgrades
  • liaise and collaborate with Information Technology, other departments and external institutions to ensure business needs are met
  • gather and review data to create detailed business requirements
  • communicate complex business and technical information to a diverse range of stakeholders

Applicants for the Business Analyst Stream must hold or be completing a degree with strong academic achievement in information technology and business information systems. Contributory studies in economics, finance, business and/or commerce would be highly valued.

As an RBA employee, you will have access to a number of benefits including an onsite cafeteria, gym, social and sporting clubs and Employee Resource Groups, which bring together employees from across the Bank who share an interest in various issues within the community.

All applicants must be Australian permanent residents or have Australian or New Zealand citizenship.
